Student advice is powered 24/7/365 by IBM Watson

IBM Watson is accessed through DeakinSync, a one-stop personalised dashboard that aggregates essential information for every student. So while students are checking unit updates and emails in DeakinSync, they can seamlessly ask Watson questions.

Ask Watson questions on any device connected to the internet

Launched in February 2015, Watson focuses on new students to support their transition to university. Over time Watson will develop to provide every student who asks a question with tailored information and advice based on their individual DeakinSync profile.

Human computer

Technology meets human intuition Watson has a unique capability to literally think and get smarter the more questions it answers. Watson will be a key destination for student questions and answers, all in real time.

Watson speaks

Watson communicates like us Understanding and providing answers in natural language breaks down barriers, and means students don’t need to know all the right words.

Watson balances

Watson is clear and confident Watson weighs up material to determine the best answer, but can also direct students to an exact person who can assist.

Watson learns

Watson is always learning Just like us, Watson continually learns and improves answers. Working together with IBM, Deakin is creating a more personalised experience for our students.

The Deakin and IBM Watson Journey

First release IBM Watson was launched in February 2015 to provide answers commonly asked questions from commencing students. All students have access to Watson in DeakinSync, a personalised dashboard for the Deakin community.

Second release This will build on the first release by expanding the range of question categories where Watson can provide answers (scheduled for July 2015).

Third release Scheduled for late 2015, this will introduce a level of contextualisation where student information such as their campus, enrolment mode and whether they are domestic or international students will be taken into account when formulating a response to questions.
